PUBLICATION POLICY AND REVIEW PROCESS
Toplum ve Bilim publishes articles in Turkish. Manuscripts, intervening reviews (değini) and book reviews can be submitted to Toplum ve Bilim via email ([email protected]) or through the “Submit an Article” [“Makale Gönder”] tab on the journal’s website. Books recommended for review should be sent to Toplum ve Bilim by postal mail or email. All submissions must comply with the journal’s style guidelines (see “Reference Style and Format”).
Manuscripts submitted to Toplum ve Bilim are expected to present original research, demonstrate a strong command of the literature, and develop a cohesive and coherent argument that advances academic knowledge within the journal’s scope. Manuscripts submitted to Toplum ve Bilim should not have been previously published elsewhere or in another language, or simultaneously submitted to another journal for publication. Editorial secretary examines all submissions for compliance with the journal’s stylistic requirements and checks the similarity score by using software recognized internationally. After the chief editors’ preliminary review of the manuscripts in terms of their scientific qualities, such as their relevance to the scope of the journal, originality, importance, and methodology, qualifying manuscripts are then sent to at least two blind reviewers for evaluation. The chief editors may accept, reject or ask for revision of the manuscript based on reviewer reports and recommendations. In cases of substantial revision, the chief editors ask reviewers to evaluate the revised manuscript as well. Toplum ve Bilim is committed to completing the review process within 3 months. Articles and other submitted materials that are not accepted for publication are not returned to the authors. Authors cannot be added or removed, and the order of authors cannot be changed once the manuscript is submitted to Toplum ve Bilim for publication. The copyright/all rights of published articles belong to Toplum ve Bilim.

Toplum ve Bilim does not charge authors for manuscript processing or publication.
MANUSCRIPT PREPERATION GUIDELINES
- Manuscripts should be prepared on one side of an A4-sized page with 2.5 cm margins on all sides using 12-point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing. Single line spacing should be used for tables and diagrams within the text. All main text should be justified.
- Original research manuscripts should include the following elements in this order: a title in both English and Turkish, an abstract in both English and Turkish (each 180-200 words), three to five keywords in both English and Turkish, the main text in Turkish, endnotes, and references. Intervening reviews (değini) and book reviews do not require abstracts or keywords.
- The title of the manuscript should be bolded. Only the first letter of the first word should be capitalized; the rest must be in lowercase, except for proper nouns and words that strictly require capitalization.
- Authors should introduce themselves by sharing their title, affiliation and email address in a footnote marked with an asterisk to their name below the title.
- All footnotes should be in 10-point size Times New Roman font, and single-spaced.
- Tables, graphs, and figures should only be included when necessary for the comprehension of the study, numbered, and accompanied by a descriptive title. Data that can be presented in the text, such as demographic characteristics, should not be presented in tables.
- All parties who contributed to the study are considered authors. Toplum ve Bilim does not publish articles generated using large language models, generative artificial intelligence, or other digital tools. The use of AI tools is permitted only if the name of the tool, the model version, and the purpose of its use are clearly stated in the relevant section, provided that the tool is used solely to visualize, tabulate, or map certain data, or to ensure that the article complies with formatting guidelines and rules.
- Authors of all submissions accepted for publication may request a copy of the issue in which their manuscript is published.
REFERENCE STYLE AND FORMAT
The author(s) are responsible for the accuracy of the sources. All sources used in writing the manuscript must be referred to the text. Citations of sources should follow the system illustrated in the examples below.
Citing Sources in the Text
References to sources should be made in the main text in parentheses, indicating the author’s last name followed by a comma, publication date followed by a colon and page number. References to different works by the same author published in the same year should be differentiated by adding “a,” “b,” etc., to the publication date. In cases of successive references to the same source, abbreviations such as “a.g.e.” or “a.g.m.” [ibid] should not be used; only the page number should be indicated, e.g. after citing (Harvey, 1985a: 17), if the same source is cited again without another source in between, only the page number, for example, (19), should be indicated. If the author’s name appears in the text, only the year of publication should be given in parentheses; for example, “... as stated by İnalcık (1989) ...”. If the author’s name does not appear in the text, both the author’s name and the publication date of the source cited should be given in parentheses; for example, (İnalcık, 1985), and where applicable page numbers should be written; for example, (İnalcık, 1985: 23-27). If the source cited has more than two authors, both surnames should be used; for example, (Lash ve Urry, 1987: 125-128). If there are more than two authors, the abbreviation “vd.” [et.al.] should be used after the first author’s surname; for example, (İnalcık vd., 1987: 23-27). If more than one source is referenced, the authors’ last names and publication dates should be separated by semicolons in the same parenthesis; for example, (İnalcık, 1985; Mardin, 1989; Poulantzas, 1979). Here sequences should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the authors’ last names. If there is more than one source by the same author, the author’s publication dates should be separated with semicolons; for example, (Poulantzas, 1979; 1987; 1991). Footnotes should only be used for notes that are not appropriate to include in the main text, and not to cite sources. References in footnotes should also follow the same format as in the main text. All sources cited in the main text and footnotes should be included in the “References” section at the end of the manuscript.
Citing Sources in the References
All works cited in the text should be listed alphabetically by the authors’ last names in the references. If an author has more than one work, the author’s last name and first initial should be repeated each time, and the list should be ordered with the author’s most recently published work at the top. If an author’s two or more works published in the same year are to be listed in the reference section, letters such as “a, b, c” should be added after the publication date to differentiate. If available, the Turkish translation of the cited source should be indicated in square brackets after the entry. Examples of reference styles for different types of publications and sources are listed below.
